Top Scientist to Join Dresden University Hospital

Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Birkenfeld is taking over the Chair of Metabolic Vascular Medicine at the Medical Clinic and Policlinic III of the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden. As holder of the new chair, he is going to intensify the connections between basic research and applied clinical research. The appointment of the former professor at the Berlin Charité Hospital was made possible through a sponsorship of GWT-TUD GmbH, a company closely related to the university, which will support the chair financially with a budget of five hundred million euros over the next five years.

In addition to his work at the university hospital, Prof. Birkenfeld will take over the scientific management of the Dresden Study Site, which specialises in research on the metabolic-vascular syndrome. He will thus be the successor of Prof. Dr. med. Markolf Hanefeld, who founded the study site 14 years ago. Prof. Hanefeld has done research at the Faculty of Medicine Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden for several decades; in the year 2000, he founded a study site that is specialised in research on metabolic and vascular diseases. With basic research work on the metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes and with clinical research projects initiated by himself as well as numerous publications, he has acquired renown among scientists on an international level.

By the end of this year, Hanefeld, who has celebrated his 79th birthday this year, will hand the operative management over to Prof. Birkenfeld. However, he will continue to support the study site in scientific matters even after that.

"The management of the renowned study site is a very exciting task for me. Our goal is to successfully face the challenges resulting from the rapid technological advances in the medical sector and the increasingly important world-wide networking and to strengthen the study site even further. First and foremost, we want to achieve this for, and in cooperation with, our patients and the participants in studies", says Prof. Birkenfeld.

In the following stage, the excellent study site will be further developed to a transregional study network, an indication-specific association of scientists, study sites and research partners from regional hospitals as well as medical specialists treating outpatients. The members of that network's scientific management will include Prof. Bornstein, Prof. Hanefeld, Prof. Birkenfeld and other colleagues.

Prof. Birkenfeld will also strengthen Dresden's involvement in the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD), a network of experts in the field of diabetes research on a national level, in order to make the latest laboratory results available for clinical applications faster.
